Guitar Books

The most important parts of learning to play guitar are to get some lessons with a good teacher, a reliable instrument and the right books. After that you just need persistence and practice to be on your way.

There are a large number of good guitar books, and importantly most of them will help you learn how to read music as you learn guitar. With some lessons from a good teacher, learning to read music isn't very hard, and it opens up a vast array of repertoire to play.

There are two types of music books, the instructional types that provide step by step guidance and those which just have songs. It is best to start with one instructional book and once you have had some lessons and you get established, your teacher will help you choose a song book.

For beginner guitar students who are primary school age the ideal instructional book is Progressive Guitar Method for the Young Beginner. This book is bright and colourful, provides step by step guidance on finger placement and music reading, and even comes with a CD and DVD. The lessons are detailed and at a good pace for children, introducing both notes and chord reading. Suitable for both boys and girls, with some lessons from their teacher they will soon be playing basic songs.

For beginners who are in secondary school or adult, the instuctional book to get is the Hal Leonard Guitar Method. This book comes in 3 volumes with complete step by step lessons on everthing you need to know to learn guitar and read music with assistance from your teacher. You can get the combined set of volumes 1, 2 and 3 in one book. This book takes you right from the start, showing finger placement and technique and music and chord reading right through to some advanced tunes and rhythms.

To get you started with some easy familiar songs on guitar, as a companion to a instructional book, you can't go wrong with Hal Leonard Easy Pop Melodies.
